Chapter 15
I set out the next morning on a mission. My mission was to find out why Mrs. Agnew had been at that abandoned building last night meeting that strange man. Plus, I needed to find out the man’s identity. I didn’t exactly know how I’d achieve this, but I’d think of something.
I planned to stop by the coffee shop, have breakfast, and discuss this with Tammy. She’d said she wasn’t going to work, that she would stop in the library to quit. Tammy would tell Mrs. Agnew that she was putting in her resignation. I’d told Tammy to call rather than have a confrontation, but I think Tammy wanted to give her a piece of her mind. I hated that Tammy had to lose her job like that, but I knew I would have done the exact same thing for her if she had been fired.
As I walked down the sidewalk toward town I was on high alert for any signs of the terrifying ghost or the strange man. Now I assumed he wasn’t a ghost since Mrs. Agnew had met with him. She wouldn’t want to be around if a ghost was there. She was always complaining about my paranormal activities.
I finally reached town with no sign of either of them. Thank goodness. I made it to the coffee shop and stepped inside. When I took a deep breath, I immediately felt much better. Dana waved at me as I headed over to the counter.
“The usual for you, Rip?” she asked.
“Yes, please,” I said. “I’ll just have a seat over here.”
“Oh, you’re not going to work this morning? Are you off today?” She picked up a paper cup for my order.
That was right, I hadn’t told her yet. Immediately my stomach twisted into a knot and I felt the tears form in my eyes.
“Oh, no, did I say something wrong?” Dana asked as she rushed over to me.
The tears streamed down my face now. “It was nothing that you said.” I wiped my cheek.
“What is it, dear?” she asked.
“I was fired from the library,” I said, fighting against more crying.
Her eyes widened and her hand flew to her mouth. “Why? What happened?”
“It’s a long story,” I said.
“I have time. Let me get your coffee and croissant and you can tell me all about it.”
I sat down at the table. While I waited for her to return with my order, I grabbed a napkin and wiped the tears from my eyes. Dana came back over with my things and sat down beside me.
She patted my hand. “Now tell me everything.”
I explained everything that had happened while I devoured that croissant.
“That’s just terrible,” she said. “I can’t believe she would do that.”
“I can’t either,” I said. “Actually, I can believe it because she’s not nice.”
Just then I received a text from Tammy.
I need to speak with you right away. It’s urgent.
This must mean that she had gone to the library. Her news probably wasn’t good. I hoped they hadn’t called the police on her.
